"The Market", oil on masonite, 16 x 19" (41 x 48cm), Private Collection

After my first attempt at markets, I became a little more fearful, so I did more planning.  I designated the focal point and started with that.   Now when I paint markets, I work them like a puzzle, starting with my focal point, then adding one person after another.  My aim is to convey the hustle and bustle of the place.

Here is the photo I used for "The Yard Sale".   You can easily see how much I've simplified.

"The Yard Sale", oil on masonite, 8 x 10" (20 x 25cm), Collection of the Artist

Going to yard sales is my favorite Saturday morning activity.   My goal in this painting was to convey the feeling of busyness while simplifying the scene.  To do this, I kept only a few figures in the painting and eliminated many of the items that were for sale - keeping enough to give the viewer the essence of the yard sale.

New Hampshire the Beautiful.tif (148611 bytes)

"New Hampshire the Beautiful", oil on masonite, 18 x 24" (46 x 61 cm), Private Collection

This painting was inspired by a meadow in Hollis, New Hampshire that I often visit.  I never know what will be growing there.  This particular time, it was the end of the season and the grass was brown, so I used the more interesting cloud formation as my focal point.
